I just wanted to provide an update to everyone who completed the survey about my new gym.
Firstly, thanks a lot for completing the survey, it helped me understand what you all look for in a gym and also gave me a lot of confidence that we could set a new gym up to continue training together.
The short – and good – news is that I’ve found a great place to train nearby to the current gym. It may not look like much yet but I think we can make it into an amazing training community in Richmond. But i’ll need your help in the next 48 hours to make it a reality.
I want to set up a new gym here focused on people like you who want results focused training and a great community of like-minded and friendly people. Training will be based on the measurable mixed implement strength & conditioning you’re all familiar with; barbells, bodyweight, kettlebells, dumbbells, ropes, sleds, lifting, challenges, testing, progressive adaptation as well as a variety of new pieces of equipment.
In the next few days I’ll be signing the lease for the property above at 56 Appleton Street, Richmond (map of location below). It’s not cheap but it’s an awesome space with over 1/3 more space than we’ve had at Cohesion (think – a longer runway for sled training!)
Here comes the scary but exciting part.
For anybody who is actually keen to start training, I need your help this week – preferably in the next day or two.
I know it’s a lot to ask but if you would be willing to pre-purchase a membership this week, that would really help me get this thing off the ground. If I’m unable to get the business up and running and classes started within four weeks, I’ll just refund your money. None of your money will be used in the mean time; it’s just to get some idea of how many members we’ll actually be starting with.
With that in mind, I’ve come up with five options for pre-purchasing a membership and becoming a foundation member of my new gym. It’s a bit like a kickstarter campaign so you can opt in at your preferred level of support. Also, everybody gets Pho! In addition to any of the options below, you will receive two weeks of FREE training, as we are setting up the gym!

How I’ll improve membership and pricing at the new gym:
I’ve listened to what you’ve all said about how much you train as well as the flexibility and cost of training and have come up with a flexible pricing structure:
- Membership options will scale based on how much you use group classes or other bookable training. Every membership will include the ability to use the gym yourself during certain designated times (we’ll start with times around group classes).
- A basic membership will cost $120 per month and allow you to use the gym yourself and pay for group class sessions and ‘training pods’ (an individual training station that will allow you to perform almost any workout, unimpeded.) as you use them ($11 for each group class session, $5.5 for a 1hr pod booking).
- Group class packages: membership options will be available that combine a basic membership with reduce rates for locking in a certain number of group sessions each month (8, 12 or unlimited) depending on how much you’ll train. And we’ll bring back ten packs for people who train irregularly.
- In time, we’ll install bookable training ‘pods’ that will include everything you need to do a great workout in one place without waiting for equipment or running across the gym from station to station.
Steps I’ve taken so far:
- Purchased some equipment to get us started
- Found new gym location, lease to be signed this week
- Begun relevant building and planning permits for local council, to be submitted this week.
What will happen next?
- Lots of you guys sign up to become foundation members – I need at least 25 to make it work!
- Undertake any fit out requirements
- Move in equipment
- Start training: within four weeks but hopefully sooner!
